Although coal mining tends to remain a man’s world, there are no gender barriers in the coalfields among people who stand in support of the industry that continues to impact nearly every aspect of life in the region.
The WV Business & Industry Council (WV-BIC) will hold their traditional weekly meetings during the Regular Legislative Session in the Governor’s Press Conference from 11-12:30 (with one exception) on the following dates: Feb. 28 -- March 7, 15 (noon instead of 11:00), 21, 28 – April 4 and 11. WVCA members are welcome to attend any of these meetings as we have been long-standing members of BIC.
The WV Mining Symposium is scheduled to begin on March 6 with the Environmental and Mine Health & Safety workshop taking the full day on Wednesday. The workshops will run concurrently. Below is a TENTATIVE PROGRAM and another registration form is attached.
The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement's (OSM), Charleston Field Office (CHFO) has released the 2012 West Virginia Annual Evaluation Report. This report is a summary of OSM's evaluation of the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection's implementation of its regulatory and abandoned mine land programs for the period July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2012. The report is available in either printed or electronic format. Printed copies of the report will be made available upon request, by calling our office at (304) 347-7158 or mailing your request to: OSM-Charleston Field Office, 1027 Virginia Street, East, Charleston, West Virginia, 25301. The electronic version of the report is available on the CHFO's web page at: http://odocs.osmre.gov/qdocs.aspx. As part of the Association’s on-going effort to reach out to groups across the state, WVCA Senior Vice President Chris Hamilton met on Feb.8 with several groups in the Eastern Panhandle Business Association and several radio stations. Hamilton discussed the current opportunities and challenges for the industry in the state and the importance of coal even to areas of the state not known for mining.
