Statement from WV Coal Association President Chris Hamilton Regarding Governor Morrisey’s Plan to Build New WV Generation Capacity
- Details
Charleston, W.Va. – Following Governor Morrisey’s announcement regarding his plan to build 50 gigawatts of electricity generation in West Virginia by 2050, Chris Hamilton offered the following statement:
“Governor Morrisey’s plan to grow West Virginia’s energy generation capacity to 50 gigawatts by 2050 is a dynamic approach to economic development which will supercharge our state’s coal industry and broader economy.
We appreciate the Governor’s commitment to consider both refurbishing existing coal-fired power plants and building new coal plants in his efforts to meet his ambitious goals. House Bill 2014, the state’s microgrid bill, dove tails with the Governor’s plan as it relates to the coal provisions requiring plants to be upgraded to run longer and more efficiently.
The Governor recognizes that there are benefits to using coal beyond just making electricity and we appreciate his commitment also working to develop and expand additional uses for coal.
We look forward to working with the Morrisey Administration and the Legislature to make this goal a reality.”
