The WVU College of Engineering is starting its own mine rescue team. Immediate Past-President Travis Hartsog said the team is looking for donations of new or used equipment, communication gear, parts and repair tools for air packs and other items as they prepare to begin competition next spring.
“We have fourteen members right now,” Hartsog said, “and we want to start competing by the beginning of next year. We are looking for everything from donations of equipment to advice, just about anything to help us meet our goal and be the best team we can be.”

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published its proposed rule last week setting New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the Federal Register (77 Fed. Reg. 22,392). The 60-day comment period commenced on Friday, and comments on the proposal are due on Tuesday, June 12, 2012.
The public can view comment submissions atregulations.gov under the docket ID no. EPA-HQ-OAR-2011-0660. A link to the online federal register site, as well as the PDF federal register version of the proposal, can be found on NMA’s website.

Governor Tomblin this week moved to join West Virginia with twenty-one other states in challenging President Obama's EPA and its latest attack on jobs and our nation’s coal industry.
Governor Tomblin has directed West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw to join a Petition for Review in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit challenging the EPA's MACT Rule. This rule has already caused electric utilities to announce plans to shut down coal-fired power plants in West Virginia.

This fall, representatives of West Virginia’s mining industry will gather at the 2012 Miners’ Celebration to recognize everyone who contributes to the enterprise. The conference will be held Oct. 4-5 at Tamarack in Beckley.
“West Virginia’s mining industry depends upon thousands of individuals in many different roles,” said Dr. Tony Szwilski, chairman of the conference planning committee and director of Marshall University’s Center for Environmental, Geotechnical and Applied Sciences. “Every one of these people—whether they are miners, safety engineers, environmental professionals, equipment suppliers, community leaders or teachers—contributes to each ton of coal produced.

The Action in Mingo (AIM) group is continuing a series of meetings with the goal of creating an amazing four-day event marking the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the birth of the King Coal Festival.

“Further Along the Road to Zero” is this year’s topic for the Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce’s Coal Symposium scheduled for August 13-15 at the Quality Hotel and Conference Center (formerly Holiday Inn) in Bluefield, WV.
A limited number of tabletop exhibit spaces are available and PDH credits may be earned.
Golf will also be a option on Monday, August 13 at the Fincastle Country Club.
