A very special episode of The Coal Seam television show will begin airing next week. The show was filmed on location at this past month’s coal rally in Pittsburgh. The show will include vignettes of the rally, which included Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin of West Virginia, Gov. Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania and Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor of Ohio. Gov. John Kasich was also on hand via a video he sent. WVCA President Bill Raney and Senior Vice President Chris Hamilton also addressed the crowd of thousands of coal miners there to protest the EPA’s GHG regulations that are shutting down coal-fired power plants and killing thousands of jobs.
Watch for the episode next week. It will be broadcast through most of September. It is available on the state Library Television Network as well as your local cable system’s public access channel. In the Charleston area, it is on Suddenlink Channel 17.

WVCA Senior Vice President Chris Hamilton was a guest on Thursday’s “After the Bell” show on Fox Business News. Interviewed by phone, Hamilton spoke about the recent increase in coal imports from Russia, Columbia and other countries – imports that are displacing Appalachian coal in markets traditionally served by West Virginia, Kentucky and other eastern coal producing states.
Host David Asman said it was unbelievable that American coal miners were being laid off while coal was increasingly shipped from other countries due in large part to the costs associated with compliance with new federal regulations imposed by the Obama Administration.

A hundred years have passed since the American economist William Graham Sumner described “the forgotten man” of society. “He works, he votes, generally he prays — but he always pays.” A century on, there is no better description of the thousands of Americans who have toiled for generations in America’s coal mines, and who are now paying dearly for the energy follies of President Obama.
The White House has been scheming to “bankrupt” coal, a plentiful and affordable source of energy, to make way for the trendier alternatives that win the applause and admiration of billionaires from New York and San Francisco. They never have to think about their impact on coal country.

Since the official launch of our online tool to have comments submitted against EPA’s proposed existing source performance standards this past week, more than 4,700 people have signed the petition. The tool has already almost doubled the total number of signatures collected during the month we used it to collect comments for the new plant source performance standards. With almost two months to go during the comment period, we hope to collect 10,000 signatures.
