State and national leaders, energy experts to address the group

State and national leaders, including West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin and Senator Jay Rockefeller, along with energy industry experts and regulators, will address representatives from the state’s coal industry during the 35th annual West Virginia Coal Association Mining Symposium to be held Wednesday, January 9 – Friday, January 11 at the Charleston House Holiday Inn in Charleston, WV. State and national leaders, including West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin and Senator Jay Rockefeller, along with energy industry experts and regulators, will address representatives from the state’s coal industry during the 35th annual West Virginia Coal Association Mining Symposium to be held Wednesday, January 9 – Friday, January 11 at the Charleston House Holiday Inn in Charleston, WV. 

According to Association president Bill Raney, “The symposium is an opportunity for the coal industry to come together to discuss current energy trends, mine health and safety developments and environmental issues. It is also an opportunity to recognize industry members for their outstanding safety and environmental efforts.”

More than 20 state and national officials will join Governor Manchin and Senator Rockefeller as presenters during the three-day event.  Other speakers include:
Kevin Crutchfield, President of Alpha Natural Resources;

James F. Roberts, Chairman of the National Mining Association and Chairman, President and CEO of Foundation Coal Corporation; 
Kenneth Nemeth, Executive Director of the Southern States Energy Board;
Dr. Charles Bayless, WVU Institute of Technology Provost;
Elliott “Spike” Maynard, Chief Justice of the West Virginia State Supreme Court of Appeals. 

On Thursday, Ron Wooten, Director of the WV Office of Miners’ Health, Safety & Training and Richard Stickler, Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Mine Safety & Health Administration, will recognize West Virginia mining operations for safety achievements during the Mountaineer Guardian Safety Awards Luncheon.

On Friday, Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Stephanie Timmermeyer will highlight exemplary reclamation accomplishments at the Annual Mine Reclamation Awards Luncheon. The symposium will also include the traditional Legislative reception on Thursday evening.
