Washington, DC – Senator Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., today released the following statement in response to actions by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in moving forward with Patriot Coal’s Hobet 45 mining permit in Lincoln County. This was the first permit given EPA approval following an earlier announcement last year that 23 surface mining permits in West Virginia were to receive an “enhanced review” by the EPA. The mining permit, once given final approval by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will help over 450 workers remain on the job. Byrd is also pleased by the decision of the EPA and Arch Coal to continue discussions in hopes of reaching an agreement on the Spruce Mine permit. Byrd met with EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson on December 22, 2009 to continue their candid and cordial dialogue on issues of importance to coal mining in West Virginia. |

During this holiest of seasons, the Friends of Coal would like to wish all a Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah and a joyous, safe and secure New Year! We want to take the time to thank God for all the blessings he has bestowed on our nation and our people. He has given us so many gifts and poured his bounty upon us all. We want to thank our military men and women for the sacrifice they give willingly to afford us the freedoms we enjoy. We ask that a loving God bring them home when their work is done. We want to thank you for all the support you have given us this past year. It has been a trying year – but we have faced it together and we will make it through, more united and more determined than ever. We want to take a moment to remember those who have passed from our rolls this year and be thankful for the proud legacy they provided for our future. We want to always remember those in need ... to reach out and extend our bounty to those less fortunate. Let us join as one to welcome the New Year and with it a new beginning – a rebirth of freedom and a renewal of hope. |

Don Nicewonder, a life-long coal operator, and J. Brett Harvey, President and Chief Executive Officer of CONSOL Energy, will be inducted into the West Virginia Coal Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Friday evening, May 8, at Stonewall Resort in Lewis County. The event starts at 6:30 pm.
Bill Raney, President of the West Virginia Coal Association, said, “The Coal Hall of Fame was created to honor and celebrate the careers and accomplishments of individuals who have had a significant impact on the West Virginia mining industry. Don and Brett are trail blazers in the coal industry – both regionally and nationally – and they are very deserving of this honor.”
Nicewonder spent more than fifty years in the coal industry before selling his mining interests in 2005. He owned and operated multiple coal operations in West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky, including White Flame Energy, Premium Energy and Twin Star Mining. Britnee Gibson, a 17-year old senior at Gilbert High School, is every bit the “coal miner’s daughter. She was born and raised in the coal fields of southern West Virginia. Her father, Dwain, is a diesel mechanic and works for a coal hauling company. Gibson is proud of the industry and the work her father does.
During the just-ended 2009 session of the West Virginia State Legislature, Gibson led the effort to have coal named the official “state rock.” The effort grew out of a project Gibson did for the CEDAR Regional Coal Fair in 2007.
“I realized the state didn’t have an official state rock,” Gibson said, “and I thought, what better to be the state rock than coal.” |
